The study analyzes the role and value of Ukrainian artillery officers of the Russian army in combat actions of World War I (1914–1918). During World War I, Ukrainian officers, time after time, demonstrated courage and heroism, so were awarded a number of high state awards. The paper identifies the features of their activities at the front, emphasizes the importance of combat experience gained by the officers in the warfare as well as its significance for the course of events throughout the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921.
Furthermore, presented brief biographical details on the Ukrainian artillery officers at various levels of military command. The officers' data on their positions in the Russian army, the awarding with the highest state honors, and the statistics of their military ranks at the time of termination of military service in the imperial army are summarized.
Precedents concerning the involvement of the Ukrainian artillery generals in planning and conducting operational and strategic operations of the Russian command, which regularly determined the course of actions at the front, are provided.
Conclusions are drawn on the relevance of studying the combat experience of the Ukrainian artillery officers in order to utilize the lesson learned from their activities to train modern officers of artillery and missile forces, as a contributing factor to the formation of contemporary military traditions and restoring the historical longevity demolished by Soviet propaganda.
