The study aims to
present a person who has several ties to the former Hungarian-administered
counties of Bereg and Ugocsa in the territory of present-day Transcarpathian region in
Ukraine. Zsigmond Perényi began his official career here, held important
positions in the leadership of Bereg and Ugocsa counties, and became one of the
outstanding figures of the period leading from the feudal system of the Kingdom
of Hungary to the birth of modern civil Hungary – the Reform Era.
The aim of the work
is on the one hand to explore Zsigmond Perényi's local regional political,
social and economic role and on the other hand his mission in the country's
reform period, which culminated in the struggles of the 1848–1849 Revolution
and War of Independence. To realize the goal, the following tasks are planned: to
highlight the political, social and economic role of Zygmond Pereni in Bereg
and Ugocha committees; to find out its mission in the era of reforms that began
in Hungary in the 19th century and reached its peak during the
revolution and liberation struggle of 1848–1849; through
archival materials, memories of contemporaries and the most important
scientific works dedicated to the mentioned era, reveal the main events of the
politician's biography and the milestones of his activity.
They came to the
conclusion that the history of Hungary in the 19th century, the
period of reform, the revolution leading to the bourgeois transformation, the
struggle for freedom that wanted to preserve the achievements brought us many
famous people and politicians. Even among these, Zsigmond Perényi is
outstanding, who played an important role in the various processes of the the
first half of the 19th century.
Perényi took part in
the parliaments convened during the Napoleonic War, he actively participated in
the reform-era parliaments, and then became a central figure in the first
national parliament of 1848–1849 where different strata of the population were
represented.
It was established
that it is almost unprecedented that he participated in nine parliaments,
sometimes in the work of the lower house (alsóház), sometimes in the work of
the upper house, (felsőház or főrendiház), and finally, during the war of
independence, he also performed the duties of the president of the upper house.
It is noteworthy that, despite the long career of Perényi's national
activities, he did not neglect the support and development of his homeland, his
native land.
